They also have a “Jaws on the Water” event which is exactly what it sounds like: watch the movie “Jaws” outdoors while floating on the water. It even has overnight accommodations if you want to make a weekend out of it. Their name is very descriptive, as it features a beach, water park, and restaurant. Volente Beach Water Park and Restaurant is nestled against Lake Travis. There are several different companies you can get with to help serve your tubing needs, or just DIY it! Either way, you’re sure to have lots of company on the river. New Braunfels, along the Guadalupe River, is famous for summer tubing. But we would be remiss to neglect sharing this experience. This is likely the furthest destination on this list at about a two hour drive. Meanwhile, Hanna Springs pool is a more classic summer pool setup with a water slide, warmer water, and diving boards. The first is Hancock Pool, a spring fed pool that is chilly all year round and formerly (likely currently?) the site of more than one baptism. Lampasas has two, very different pool experiences to offer. It features a swimming area and hosts numerous events like fishing, Oktoberfest, BOSS events, and, most famously, the BLORA “Nature in Lights” during Christmastime. It is part of the Fort Hood MWR amenities but is also open to the community at larger. BLORAīLORA (pronounced “blora”) is the Belton Lake Outdoor Recreation Area, run with military-like precision because the military owns it. Lions Club Park has quite a few year-round amenities like a fitness center, soccer and baseball fields, and not one, not two, but three different playgrounds.īut when the Texas heat is at its worst, that is when the park is at its best, as it is home to a very refreshing water park called the Aquatics Center. The largest and most accessible park is Dana Peak Park in Harker Heights, perfect for easy access to the water, BBQ, and summer fun. Stillhouse Hollow Lake is the slightly larger one, featuring the most opportunities for a small amount of boating, hiking, biking, horseriding, and camping (I hear that Belton Lake, consequently, is better for fishing). Killeen is blessed to have not one but two lakes nearby and very accessible. WOW! I didn’t even know that was possible.Stillhouse Hollow Lake and Dana Peak Park Unbelievably this picture got 844 likes, 114 shares and 92 comments. The picture above of Chalk Ridge Falls is one I posted on Facebook in a group I am in called, “Texas Backroads”. Here’s another story, yep it’s story time. I ended up with about 4 miles on this trip. I headed up the Lampasas towards the dam and found a duck. I ended up on the other side of the creek and got some better shots of the falls. I doubled back because the trail became very faint. It took me up into the canyon where the creek begins. On my second trip here, I found a trail I had never been on. I continued down the Lampasas but soon the trail was so overgrown with tall grass that had fallen across I figured winter might be the time to locate this other waterfall. So, to have a leafy canopy and shade on a hike is somewhat rare. Most of Central Texas is covered in Ash Juniper (called mountain cedar in Texas), Live Oak, and Mesquite trees none of which grow very big. I guess I have been in Texas too long already. “The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.” John MuirĮxcited over trees…. In this park was something I hadn’t seen much of in a while, huge trees! They like water or are just not that plentiful in central Texas. I hiked down the Lampasas River looking for the second waterfall that is supposed to be here. The park is small and after the falls I crossed the suspension bridge. On this day I was fortunate enough to view the falls through a light fog. Below the dam a spring fed tributary of the Lampasas River has a wonderful waterfall that flows year round. It was built in 1968 to provide flood control downstream and water for surrounding communities. Stillhouse Hollow Lake is on the Lampasas River. And here I found some of the biggest trees I have seen so far in Texas! Stillhouse Hollow Lake from the dam Stillhouse Hollow Dam There are many places for water to fall, there’s just no water. A good waterfall in this part of Texas is rare. To the east near the dam is a small but great hiking venue at Chalk Ridge Falls. Dana Peak Park is on the northern shore of Stillhouse Hollow Lake.
